Street Music And Personal Expression

Street Music has developed into a popular music variety.  Street music including rap music is an art form. Hip hop music too has come a long way and should be renowned for the art it has become. The influence of street music is seen even on fashion. Hip hop is, at the moment, ruling the charts.

People have different ideas about the origin of gangster rap music. To be able to understand Rap music, one has to come to understand just what is recognized as the Hip Hop culture. Rap is a very essential part of the evolution of this Hip Hop culture. Besides music, Rap contains graffiti, break dancing, new attitudes, and a unique style of clothing. The origin of the Hip Hop culture was centered in the Bronx in New York City. Rap appeared as the result of frustration in African-American people in the 1970s. This musical genre was born in the crime-ridden communities of West Bronx, which later spread to South Bronx and all around the world.

Possibly even more importantly, American Rap music was highly influenced by Jamaican music. Before taking a look at rap music in the United States, music in Jamaica needs to be looked at first. Jamaican music held a massive impact on American Rap music and it’s creation in the early seventies. Types of Jamaican music that should be looked at are “toasting” and “Dub” music.

Toasting was usually done at “Blues Dances”, these characteristics were regular in the Jamaican ghettos and there they performed American R&B, a method of music introduced to them by Black American sailors stationed on the island. With the increasing demand for R&B and the absence of a band on the island that can play this type of music, Jamaicans adapted and produced sound systems. These large arrangements were made up of Disk Jockeys (DJ), bouncers, and engineers; they were movable nightclubs or discos that were set up.

Rap is extremely distinct from other types of music. The most differentiating characteristic of rap music is the very fast, yet rhythmically spoken phrases and words. These “rapped” words are then documented over the background music that usually includes some sort of bass and many keyboard sounds. The absence of musical instruments in most rap songs differentiates it even more from the other types of music. Yet one of the prime characterizations of rap music is situated within the music’s lyrics.

Many rap musicians and their listeners consider street music and rap to be an “expression of themselves” and that the words should not be taken literally. In fact numerous people can relate with the ideas and opinions of the Street Hip Hop artists. Yet many rap music can be considered very controversial in today’s society. Artists usually show an extensive knowledge of their subject material and to rap successfully, one has to examine what they are declaring. Effective rap artists happen to be able to bring about some emotive components in their act. This is crucial for connecting with the audience.  They rap about matters that they are familiar with and build their vocabulary in subjects about which they would like to rap.
